Green Giants Recycling Program

Description:

In 2010, students from Moeller High School and Starfire U paired up to help with the recycling collections round the school.  Starfire U is a local non profit which helps give a great education and meaningful life experiences to other-abled students from around Cincinnati.  In addition to assisting with the bi-weekly collection of scrap paper, plastic bottles, cans, and other recyclable items from each of the classrooms at Moeller, students from both schools recieve an opportunity to form a relationship with each other and break down barriers.  Collections are bi weekly and will happen during M-Blocks.  All recycleable materials are to be placed in the Rumpke co-mingled dumpsters except for bins with paper only.  Those bins are placed in the Abitibi paper dumpster.

Purpose:

The Moeller community uses a great deal of paper – approximately a case a day.   With each case costing roughly $25, Moeller spends well over $4500 annually purchasing the paper.  We can all work together to reduce this cost as well by reducing our needs, but we can also reuse most of the paper that still has a usable side. This is a great educational opportunity for our students as the cost of fuel continues to rise.

In addition, Moeller students go through a vast amount of aluminum cans and plastic bottles.  It is a true waste to be throwing away the volume that we do.  With the new recycling bins we aim to cut the amount of waste dreastically.

Finally, both student groups recive a chance to form meaningful and lasting bonds.  This is a very important component of the program.  Students accepted into the Green Giants progam must leave all preconcieved notions of those who are other-abled behind and be open to these new relationships.

Commitment:

Students who are selected for this program will utilize their M-blocks to participate in this activity.  Once a schedule has been developed by the leaders, participants will report the Pastoral Ministry office bi-weekly to help with the recycling efforts.  Students will be expected to participate in all scheduled activities to be a member of this program.

Service Hours:

Students who participate in this program will recieve one service hour every time they perform their appointed paper recycling duties.  Generally a student can earn about 15 to 20 hours of service by the end of the year.
